12/17 : Searching For Angela Shelton

from imdb:

"At the age of twenty-seven, writer and actress, Angela Shelton, who had already received accolades for her previous movie, "Tumbleweeds," set out to create a documentary during the Writer's Strike. Her goal was to survey women in America by interviewing the women who shared her name. She threw a party to raise funds and convinced a crew of four to go on the road for 60 days in a rented motor home."

40% of our movie night picks are DVDs distributed by The Criterion Collection (18 out of 45).

4 of the last 5 movie nights have been Criterion Collection.

I can assure you that the next one is not.

Our DVD Collection

After I spent about an hour cataloging Caitlin's and my DVDs, I figured I would print to a .pdf, put all of the pages together in Photoshop, and size it down so you guys could see it. Obviously, some of the titles are missing directors, proper covers, etc. But I was too excited to go ahead and post this than spend time fixing all of the little errors (which I'll do later). Unfortunately, the program I used is only for Mac OS-X, so only Joe and I can use it (unless you guys get Apples).

And, by the way Joe, Caitlin emailed you the links to the program and activation code.

The image below is a link to the full-sized image (click it), which you may have to click the magnifying glass to enlarge to its full size. There are 174 titles, 13 of which are Criterion Collection, and 9 of which belong to my Stanly Kubrick box-set.

Lastly, my contact at Criterion Collection sent us the newest Grey Gardens sequel, The Beales at Grey Gardens. Since it's not by a female director, I'll have to show it next time. That is, if you guys are interested in seeing it. If you remember, it was one of the selctions for a movie night Caitlin and I hosted at our old house. Rory, if you'd like to borrow the first Grey Gardens so that you know what's going on when we watch the sequel, I can lend it to you whenever.

It's about damn time, Rory!

Hey guys. The site looks great! Thanks for setting it up. My apologies for not visiting earlier. I plan on visiting this site regularly now, but I am still catching up on reading all the past posts. This Sunday, for our second film in the women directors series, I have selected the 1976 documentary Harlan County, U.S.A. directed by Barbara Kopple. Here is a brief synopsis from Netflix:

"Director Barbara Kopple's film about the 1973 coal miners' strike in Harlan County, Ky., won a Best Documentary Oscar and was selected for the National Film Registry. Highlighting the struggles of families living in shacks with no indoor plumbing and enduring hazardous working conditions, the film details the conflict between the Eastover Mining Co. and the laborers determined to join the United Mine Workers of America."

While looking on Wikipedia for Women's Cinema for some ideas, I recognized the title of this film but knew nothing about it. I was hooked after reading about it. I recently finished reading Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States which dealt with a lot of labor movements and how laborers were routinely treated like shit by the companies (and the government) even when their demands were very fair. It is shocking how many laborers have been killed in the history of this country. Hopefully the subjects of this documentary won't meet with such a fate.

Anyway, you know the drill. I'll have coke, bottled water, and (probably) some beer. I'm getting the 5-5-5 deal from Domino's (cheese, pepperoni, and sausage) like last time. See you guys then!
