Things you may have read:

James Murray, the leading actor, was an extra in movies before The Crowd. The film catapulted him to stardom but his personal problems (such as alcoholism) eventually led to his death by drowning in the Hudson River at the age of 35.

The studio ordered King Vidor to shoot an alternate ending because the original ending, as we've seen, is not a traditional happy ending

I read somewhere that he actually shot like nine different endings.

That seems like a bit much.
